RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A report on the possibility of uranium mining in Virginia is generating a divided reaction.

The company that wants to mine a 119-million-pound deposit of the ore in Pittsylvania says the Uranium Working Group report issued Friday "leaves no doubt" that Virginia regulators are up to the task to safely regulate the mining of the radioactive ore.

The report does not recommend whether a 30-year ban should be lifted, but lays out a framework for the state to regulate it.

But Cale Jaffe of the Southern Environmental Law Center argues that the report deals with a "hypothetical" set of issues. He says the General Assembly will decide whether the ban should be lifted, and he said a consensus is building that it should not.
