HAMPTON, Va. —
Federal authorities in Virginia have arrested an Alabama man who had been on the run from law enforcement for five years.
Fernando Harris was captured in Hampton on Monday.
The U.S. Marshals Service says Harris was wanted by the Drug Enforcement Agency in Huntsville, Ala. for his suspected participation in a drug conspiracy involving possession of cocaine with intent to distribute.
In 2008, federal warrants were issued for 33 people suspected of taking part in a 138-count indictment that stretched through Alabama, Texas, California and Mexico. All but two of the suspects were captured within two months of the warrants being issued.
Federal authorities say Harris immediately went into hiding to avoid arrest. He was previously convicted of cocaine possession in 1999.
