Va. Beach prosecutor says fatal shooting justified

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The Virginia Beach prosecutor says the fatal shooting of a suspect by an off-duty Portsmouth police officer was justified.

Commonwealth’s Attorney Harvey Bryant says 30-year-old Courtney Andrew Holloman was shot on Sept. 14 after he entered a credit union in Virginia Beach and announced he was robbing it. Holloman also pointed an object that appeared to be a handgun at the tellers.

The off-duty officer was a customer. Bryant says the officer identified himself as law enforcement to Holloman, who pointed the object toward him.

Bryant says the officer had no way to know that the object wasn’t a real firearm.

Holloman was shot in the torso and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer hasn’t been named.

Media outlets report that Bryant releases his office’s findings Monday.
