I-81 section named in honor of late Va congressman

ATHENS — A section of Interstate 81 has been named in honor of the late U.S. Rep. William Wampler Sr.

Media outlets report that a ceremony marking the Congressman William Wampler Sr. Memorial Highway was held Monday.

The section runs from Bristol to Christiansburg and crosses most of the 9th District, which Wampler represented.

Wampler was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1952 and served a single term. He was elected again in 1956 and served until he lost a re-election bid in 1982.

Wampler died in 2012. He was 86.
