Va. inmates, driver injured when van runs off road

— —  State police say a van carrying eight Virginia prison inmates ran off the road in Caroline County, resulting in minor injuries to all eight inmates and serious injuries to the driver.

The Virginia Department of Corrections van ran off the road shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday and struck a tree. Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller said seven of the male inmates were taken from the scene for treatment of the injuries, while the eighth was treated at the scene.

The van driver was taken to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg for injuries Geller said are not life threatening.

She said law enforcement officials accompanied inmates who were taken from the scene for treatment.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
