Appalachian Trail volunteers log 245,500 hours

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA — The Appalachian Trail Conservancy says about 6,000 volunteers devoted more than 245,500 hours to maintaining and protecting the trail for hikers last year.

The organization says that’s equivalent to the work that can be done by 118 full-time workers.

The News & Advance reports that since the conservancy began reporting volunteer hours in 1983, volunteers have donated about 4.9 million hours. Volunteer hours have increased by one-third in the last 10 years.

The Appalachian Trail stretches from Maine to Georgia and is about 2,185 miles long. It is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world.
