Va. mom sentenced for attacking son with ax

HANOVER, Va. — A Hanover County woman will spend 25 years in prison for attacking her son with an ax and trying to burn down their home.

Media outlets report that 31-year-old Kimberly Shepperson of Mechanicsville was sentenced Thursday in Hanover County Circuit Court.

Judge J. Overton Harris gave Shepperson 85 years in prison and then suspended 60 years.

Shepperson pleaded guilty in October 2013 to attempted capital murder, arson and malicious wounding charges.

Shepperson was charged with attacking her 11-year-old son with an ax in February 2013, giving him a prescription sleep aid and setting fire to their home. The boy survived the attack.

In a statement to investigators, Shepperson attributed the attack to an argument with her former husband over custody of two of her children.
