3 charged in Virginia after girls tattooed

RUSTBURG, Va. (AP) — A Virginia woman and two others have been charged with malicious wounding and child abuse after her two children were tattooed and attempts were then made to remove the tattoos.

Media outlets report 35-year-old Melissa Delp and her 32-year-old boyfriend, Daniel Janney, were charged Friday. According to a search warrant, the pair was charged after Janney attempted to remove the tattoos from Delp’s daughters with a hot razor blade at their Concord home.

“These charges stem from their response to what they found when they came home,” said Campbell County sheriff’s Maj. L.T. Guthrie. “There was an effort to cover these tattoos up.

“It didn’t help the situation any. It added more scarring.”

Delp and Janney are being held in the Blue Ridge Regional Jail System.

Guthrie said the girls were in the care of family friend Alexander Edwards on Dec. 22 when Edwards allegedly tattooed them without their consent or the consent of their parents. In addition to the other charges, Edwards, 20, also is charged with abduction.

Michael Mucklow, co-owner of a tattoo removal business in Kutztown, Pa., said he would like to offer free removal or referral to the two girls using a non-invasive procedure that uses lasers to break down the pigment of a tattoo.

“It breaks my heart to know they have gone through something like that,” Mucklow said. “I can’t imagine what it’s like.”
