Navy: F/A-18 jet crashes in Atlantic off Virginia

NORFOLK, Va. — A Navy spokesman says an F/A-18E jet has crashed in the Atlantic Ocean about 50 miles off the Virginia coast and the pilot has been rescued.

Cmdr. Mike Kafka says the jet crashed about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. He says the pilot ejected from the jet and was recovered by a Navy helicopter. Kafka says the pilot is conscious, but he gave no other details immediately about the crash or the pilot’s health.

The aircraft was based at Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach.
