Va. alcohol regulators make moonshine bust

RICHMOND, Va. —  Authorities have uncovered a moonshine operation while responding to an assault complaint in southwest Virginia.

Officials say the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office arrested 47-year-old Michael Pickle for felony sexual assault on Sunday when two moonshine stills were discovered at a Rural Retreat home.

The Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control says its agents also seized 13 firearms, active mash, marijuana, untaxed liquor and other controlled substances from the home.

ABC agents continue to investigate the alcohol violations and criminal charges are pending, following laboratory analysis.

It’s the second time in the past month that ABC agents have collaborated with the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office.

Last month, the agency discovered two illegal whiskey stills behind a Wytheville residence but no arrests have been made.
