Va board member arrested in counterfeit sting

COLONIAL BEACH, Va. — A Colonial Beach School Board member and six others are facing charges following an investigation into counterfeit items sold at a Warsaw flea market.

The Free Lance-Star reported Wednesday that board member Cletus Wayne Kennedy, 67, was arrested and charged with two counts of obtaining money by false pretenses and three counts of trademark infringement. The arrest followed a July 30 search of the market by state police.

State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar said the individuals are facing 52 felony charges involving intellectual property crimes. The charges include three warrants for violating a law that requires recording devices to show the true name of the manufacturer, seven warrants for obtaining money by false pretenses, 14 warrants for trademark infringement and 28 warrants for selling or renting certain recording devices, Molnar said.

Molnar did not identify what items Kennedy was selling that were believed to be counterfeit.

Kennedy, who is a former mayor and assistant school principal, was released on bond. His next court appearance is Sept. 13 in Richmond County General District Court.

He did not return a telephone message left at his home. A message left with the school board also was not returned.
