Worker freed from northern Va. trench collapse

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — A construction worker is recovering from an eight-hour ordeal in a collapsed trench in Falls Church.

A Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department spokesman says the man was freed early Friday morning, shortly after midnight.

He says the man was conscious and alert throughout the evening as rescuers worked to free him from the 12-feet-deep trench.

The trench collapsed around 4 p.m. Thursday in a yard off Venice Street, buying the man up to his chest in mud.
