Va. social worker admits to decades-old minor sex

CHATHAM, Va. — A former social worker in Pittsylvania County faces sentencing next month after pleaded guilty to four counts stemming from a sexual relationship she had with a minor in her custody nearly 25 years ago.

The Danville Register & Bee (http://bit.ly/ITmm1h ) reports that 55-year-old Mary M. Laughinghouse pleaded guilty this month to charges of taking indecent liberties with a minor. She entered the plea in Pittsylvania County Circuit Court.

The offenses occurred in 1989 and 1990 when she was a social worker with the county Department of Social Services. She was the victim’s caseworker.

In 2010 and 2011, the victim contacted Laughinghouse seeking “closure,” but was told not to call back. He ultimately contacted police.

Laughinghouse is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 29 in Pittsylvania County Circuit Court.
