Va. National Guard unit to mobilize for Kuwait

SANDSTON, Va. — A Virginia National Guard unit has received orders to mobilize for duty in Kuwait.

National Guard Adjutant General Major Daniel E. Long Jr. said Thursday that about 70 members of the Virginia Beach-based 529th Combat Combat Support Battalion, 329th Regional Support Group will begin serving on federal active duty June 19, 2014.

They will plan and execute combat sustainment support for U.S. and coalition forces in Kuwait and the surrounding region.

Before deploying to Kuwait, the soldiers will undergo 45 to 60 days of mobilization training at Fort Hood, Texas.

Most of the unit’s members are from the Hampton Roads area. There also are about 10 soldiers from the Richmond area, 10 from Southwest Virginia and five from Northern Virginia.

The unit previously deployed to Afghanistan in March 2010.
