Va. Beach baby sitter sentenced in toddler’s death

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — A Virginia Beach baby sitter convicted of killing a 2-year-old boy will spend 22 years in prison.

Media outlets report that 35-year-old Brenda Kay Garner received a 45-year sentence Wednesday. Virginia Beach Circuit Court Judge H. Thomas Padrick suspended 23 years of the sentence and barred Garner from having unsupervised contact with children for 45 years.

Garner was convicted in August of child abuse and second-degree murder in the death of Garrett King.

Police say the boy’s mother dropped him off at Garner’s home on Nov. 14, 2012. Police and emergency personnel went to the home that afternoon in response to a report of an unconscious child. The boy died at a hospital the next day.

The cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the head.
