Tiger attacked, killed by other big cat at Va zoo

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (AP) — A white Bengal tiger is dead after being attacked by another tiger at a suburban Richmond zoo.

Metro Richmond Zoo Director Jim Andelin say a 5-year-old female tiger named McCoy was attacked by a 2 ½-year-old male Kumba on Saturday minutes after McCoy had swatted at the other cat in an outdoor enclosure.

Andelin tells the Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/Qvs9MF ) the attack happened so quickly that there was nothing zoo staff could have done. He says a tranquilizer would have taken at least 10 minutes to work. McCoy was dead within two minutes.

Andelin says it's the first time they've had an attack with the zoo's cats. The two cats had been together for 8 months.

Kumba remains separated from the other two tigers, which were not involved in the attack.
