Va. woman accused of poisoning 2 children

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — A woman suspected of trying to poison her two children has been charged with attempted murder in Virginia Beach.

Police spokesman Patrick D. Kane says Lorita M. Aiken was arrested Saturday. The 26-year-old is charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of alteration of food, drink or drugs.

Police who had been called to a condominium Friday morning found Aiken and her two children unresponsive. They were taken to local hospitals for treatment, and the children were recuperating. A police news release gave no further details about the children’s illnesses or their conditions.

Aiken was being held without bond in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center. Jail records didn’t indicate whether she has an attorney.

The case remains under investigation.
