Va. couple who kept girl in cage get 30 years

GLOUCESTER, Va. — A Gloucester County couple has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for keeping their daughter in a makeshift cage.

WAVY-TV reports Brian and Shannon Gore were sentenced Monday to 10 years for child abuse and 20 years for malicious wounding.

Deputies were investigating a burglary report in April 2011 when they found the couple’s 6-year-old girl in a crib that was turned upside down and weighted down. She was naked, covered in her own feces and so malnourished she was eating flakes of her own skin.

The couple pleaded guilty in March to felony child abuse charges. They also entered Alford pleas on aggravated malicious wounding charges. That means they didn’t admit guilt but agreed that evidence was strong enough to convict them.
