3 Virginia coal industry groups merge

LEBANON, Va. —  Three Virginia coal advocacy groups are merging to unify their efforts in addressing issues facing the industry.

The merger will combine the Virginia Coal Association, the East Coal Council and the Virginia Mining Association. The new organization is called the Virginia Coal and Energy Alliance.

The new organization’s headquarters will be located in Lebanon.

The Bristol Herald Courier reports that the groups announced the merger Monday.

Eastern Coal Council executive director Barbara Altizer says the merger will create a stronger, more unified group in education and outreach efforts. Altizer will serve as the new organization’s executive director of education and outreach.
