BECKLEY, W.Va. —
Hinton Lions Club member Robbie Merritt and three other motorcyclists began a 6,000-mile journey Thursday to benefit an ongoing eyesight fundraiser for Summers County called Lions Conquering Blindness.
By 2 p.m., Merritt, along with Jimmy Gore, Robbie Richmond and Charlie Mann, all of Hinton, had almost made it to Nashville, Tenn., said Merritt’s wife, Mary Beth.
“They pulled out at 6 a.m. from Hinton and they are almost in Nashville,” Mary Beth, also a Lions Club member, said.
Mary Beth said $2,000 had already been pledged for the 6,000-mile round-trip that is scheduled to take about 14 days.
All of the money raised will be used locally for people in need in the southern West Virginia area.
“We are continuing to take donations and sponsorships for the eyesight project,” Mary Beth said. “If you donate a penny a mile, then that would equal about $60, which is the same cost of an eye examination.”
“One hundred percent of the funds raised in the Ride for Sight project will be used for people in Summers County, she added.”
The four members are expected to reach the West Coast in about five days and are scheduled to meet with other Lions Club members. For more information on how to sponsor a rider, contact Jack Woodrum at 466-3789 or Bobby Wheeler at 466-1121.
