Five different items about a variety of sports

MORGANTOWN — Stringing together some odds and ends which may be of interest to you:

In a continuing federal court case out West, an economist recently testified that student athletes could receive as much as $1 million were he or she given a half share of a major college’s revenue from network game broadcasts over a four year period.

For starters, wouldn’t that remove intercollegiate athletics completely out of the amateur status that such competition was intended to be?

Sure, most universities – including WVU -- are making more millions than ever. Not only from media rights, which remain in lengthy, drawn out litigation, but from selling tickets at soaring costs to fans.

So perhaps those schools should pay today’s athletes a fair stipend annually. But in the projected $1 million possibility? …

In that connection, do you suppose were anything of that magnitude come to pass, would former athletes over the years seek similar benefits?

My thought is that they would have a right legitimate beef.

I remember in the early years athletes weren’t even getting scholarships. That included members on West Virginia’s 1942 basketball team, and it won the National Invitation Basketball Tournament championship.

Later in the 1950s and perhaps beyond, each was permitted just $15 per month for laundry and dry cleaning.

Those were considered good ole days, though. …

Best wishes go out to Bob Huggins, who is in rehab following hip replacement a week ago Monday.

WVU’s veteran head men’s basketball coach had the surgery done in Pittsburgh. He was released two days later.

Huggins sat on a stool, when not standing, during games last season to ease the pain.

Hopefully, he’ll experience a quick and full recovery. …

I’m inclined to agree with Morgantown football sports beat writer Ed Owens that Clint Trickett will be the starting quarterback in West Virginia’s season opener against favored Alabama on Aug 30 at Atlanta, Ga.

Owens went on to rate all the five signal-callers who will be on the official roster when camp opens on Aug. 1.

Trickett, a Morgantown area native, started seven games last season as a transfer from Florida State. Senior Paul Millard started three games. Ford Childress got the other two starts and left school at season’s end.

Owens’ other QB rankings are: sophomore Skyler Howard, No. 2; junior college transfer Logan Moore, No. 3; freshman William Crest, No. 4; and the aforementioned Paul Millard, No. 5.

That’s interesting. …

In case you haven’t heard, two arrest warrants against WVU men’s basketball recruit Tarik Philip have been dropped for now in North Carolina.

But Philip has two new dates to appear in courts in North Carolina. If he doesn’t appear for those, the arrest warrants could be reinstated.

Phillip, who received honorable mention in junior college All-America voting, signed with the Mountaineer program in April.

The two warrants were for arrests in 2011 and 2012 when he was enrolled at Queen College in Charlotte, N.C.
