Stoner Avenue name to stay, despite sign thefts

BEMIDJI, Minn. — A Minnesota road named Stoner Avenue will keep its name, despite ongoing thefts of street signs.

The Bemidji City Council tabled the issue of changing the street name last week after residents spoke out against the plan, Minnesota Public Radio reports.

City officials said they have spent nearly $20,000 replacing the street signs over the past decade, which are stolen at a rate of about 15 per year.

Officials are now going to try to make the signs less vulnerable to theft.

Stoner Avenue is name for Bemidji’s first city engineer and county surveyor, Marcus Stoner.
