— BEULAH, Mich. – There are numerous ways to elude police and a 32-old-man may have added another to the list: swim away.
Deputies ended up dragging Joseph J. Barnum from a lake after he got involved in a high-speed chase with police that ended with him wrecking his car.
Authorities later spotted Barnum by a lake and a foot chase ensued. But Barnum jumped into the water and swam away. Deputies continued their pursuit with the help of two boats and were able to direct the suspect toward shallow water where police jumped in. Then they used their tasers to subdue him.
Manistee Sheriff Dale Kowalkowski said the man probably fled because he was out of prison on parole and his release would likely be revoked. “His mindset at that point was he’s got nothing to lose,” he said.
