Concord prepares for homecoming

By JEFF HARVEY

ATHENS — While there are no plays scheduled for Concord University’s Homecoming Week celebration, the central hub of American theater will be honored as the week’s theme.

Kati Whittaker, CU director of alumni relations, said Tuesday, “The theme for this year is ‘Broadway Shows.’ The campus organizations will be designing their floats (for the Oct. 16 Homecoming Parade) along that theme.”

Starting on Monday, student organizations that are sponsoring candidates for homecoming king and queen will set up campaign and display tables on the sidewalk between the Jerry L. Beasley Student Center and the Joseph F. Marsh Library.

On Thursday, Oct. 16, the Annual Homecoming Parade, down Vermillion Street, will start at 6 p.m. After the parade, the Homecoming Bonfire in the Valley between the Beasley Center and the Rahall Technology Center will begin at 6:45 p.m.

The Concord Alumni Association will host its Alumni Social in the Television Lounge of the Student Center, starting at 5 p.m. At 6 p.m., the Homecoming Banquet will be held in the Ballroom of the Student Center, with Concord Professor of Accounting Emeritus Harry Finkelman as the featured speaker. The banquet will also feature the Alumni Association’s annual awards, class reunions for the Concord College classes of 1958 and 1983, and the induction ceremony for the 2008 class of the Concord Athletics Hall of Fame.

The inductees are former Concord College head football coach Marvin Williams, who went 31-12 from 1983-88, with two WVIAC titles; three-time All-WVIAC volleyball star Katrina Street Terry; the late Tracy Poindexter who scored 1,624 points (24.3 a game) while playing for the Concord Mountain Lions men’s basketball team from 1981-83, leading the WVIAC in scoring the first two years; Kevin McClung who played baseball for Concord from 1999-2002 and was a three-time All-WVIAC player in baseball; David “Tony” Lipscomb, who rushed for 2,819 yards and scored 158 points in his football career from 1974-77; Katrina I. Daniels, the second-leading scorer in Concord women’s basketball history, who played from 1990-94; and Steven M. Brinkley, who was a defensive star for the Concord football team from 1976-79 and defensive MVP of the 1978 Coal Bowl and WVIAC Defensive Player of the Year that same year.

At 8:30 p.m., there will be a Lip Sync Contest in the Main Gym of the Carter Center.

Friday will also feature voting for the Homecoming King and Queen.

On Saturday, Oct. 18, there will be an Athletics Golf Tournament, at Pipestem State Park, starting at 9 a.m. Starting at 10 a.m. Alpha Sigma Alpha will hold a Sorority Tea in the Ballroom. At noon, Alpha Sigma Tau will be holding a Sorority Tea, in the Lounge, of the North Towers. Also at noon, Sigma Sigma Sigma will hold its Sorority Tea at its Lodge. At 2 p.m., Delta Zeta will have its Sorority Tea in the bottom floor of the Student Center, next to Subway.

Starting at 3 p.m. the parking lots adjacent to and above Callaghan Stadium will be open for the Alumni Tailgater, with the Pi Kappa Phi fraternity gathering for its own Alumni Tailgater. From 4 p.m. to the third quarter, the Alumni Association will have an information and refreshment table set up in the stadium parking lot, with alumni registration held from 4 to 6 p.m.

At 6 p.m., the CU-Glenville State football game will kick off.

At half-time, the crowning of the Homecoming Queen and King will be held.

After the game, there will be a fireworks display.

Other events will include: A Phi Sigma Phi/Epsilon fraternity alumni gathering; a 45th anniversary celebration for the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity; a Cherry-Gray golf tournament to be held at Pipestem, with a registration fee of $65.

Other events include a pig roast, t-shirt making, pepper-eating contest and more. Donations for the Reagan Alzheimer’s Foundation will also be accepted. Contact Frater Alex Hosseini at (304) 952-7470 for more information.

Whittaker said, “We would like to encourage all our alumni and friends to come and take part in our Homecoming celebration.”
