Organizers roll out ramps for Go Skate Day

By TAMMIE TOLER

PRINCETON — Organizers are rolling out all the stops and ramping up the fun for the local observance of Go Skateboarding Day.

“We’re gonna have a rockin’ Go Skate Day,” Shane Ellison, the man behind most of the plans, said this week.

Nationally, Go Skate Day is set for June 21, but that date also falls on Father’s Day this year. So, in an effort to keep the annual skateboarders’ holiday in place and still give dads their own day, Go Skate Day will happen a day earlier in Princeton — at Cornerstone Family Church on Brick Street, June 20, 2—7 p.m.

Presented by Planet Xtreme Teen Center and Skateboards Plus, the day’s activities will include a KKSM skate demo featuring Siren and Reliance boards and a skating contest with age-appropriate contests for competitors 15 and under and 16 and above. There is a $5 fee to enter the contest, and Ellison said prizes will be awarded for first, second and third places.

In addition, Black Rose Mourning will make sure the day rocks, even while its participants roll. Founded in 2006, Black Rose Mourning promotes a hybrid style of metal, metalcore and heavy rock, all with a faith-based, uplifting message. And, there will be plenty to do, even off the boards and ramps. Ellison said there will be refreshments and baked goods available to snack on, along with balloons, facepainting, a bounce house, an inflatable obstacle course and a water balloon throwing booth where Ellison, Planet Xtreme’s Tim Smith and CFC’s Scott Catron will serve as the targets.

That’s not all, though, there will also be designer sunglasses up for grabs in a prize drawing.

The event sponsored in part by CASE of West Virginia and Community Connections, should offer something for nearly everyone, and Ellison invited anyone interested in skating to check it out.

“It’s going to be sweet!” he said.
