CU quarterback’s ‘Flame Car’ gets bashed for Relay For Life

By MARIYA MIHOVA

ATHENS — On Saturday, March 29, Concord University hosted Relay For Life and helped raise money and awareness for cancer research.

For many students, the most interesting fund-raising event of the day was undeniably the car smash.

Mountain Lion quarterback Dustin Greenwood donated his infamous “Flame Car” to Relay For Life, where it was demolished in the name of charity, Enthusiasts paid $1 for the opportunity to hit it with a sledgehammer.

Greenwood, originally from Fluvanna, Va., has been involved with fund-raising for Relay For Life for quite a while.

“I started doing it because I realized how much of an impact it had on my life. My roommate had cancer, and my neighbors had possible skin cancer,” said Greenwood, who has been the quarterback for the Mountain Lions since spring 2007.

Between the more than 100 hits the Flame Car took, plus a single donation of $100, the car smash raised $250 for cancer research.

“The car had a big reputation, not just here but at home too, because my brother drove it in high school. My father suggested we should do it,” Greenwood said.

The CU Football team will maintain its involvement in fund raising and awareness for Relay for Life in April with a Bid for Bachelors.

Bid for Bachelors is a date auction open to anyone interested in helping out Relay for Life.

The auction is scheduled for April, 17 at 7 p.m. in the ballroom of the Student Center on Concord University campus.
