Bluefield Daily Telegraph

MERCER SHERIFF

Oct. 8

• BURGLARY, PETIT LARCENY: Dep. E.P. Parks received a report from a man who stated a white male subject had come to his mother's residence and claimed he worked for the tax assessor's office. The male allegedly entered the residence, looked into the woman's bedroom and turned the light on, at which time he claimed he needed to measure the dimensions of the room. As he proceeded to do so, another man reportedly entered the residence. Becoming suspicious, the woman allegedly told the men that her son would be there any time. The two suspects then fled, but the woman reportedly noticed soon after that an envelope containing cash was missing and that her drawers had been searched.

Oct. 9

• OBSTRUCTING, DISORDERLY CONDUCT: Senior Dep. W.C. Wilborn and Sgt. S.J. Cary responded to the intersection of Courthouse Road and City View Heights, where a possible domestic dispute was reported. The officers located the couple and contacted Princeton Rescue Squad to treat the woman, who reportedly had a bleeding gash above one eye. Neither party cooperated with the investigation, and officers advised the man to leave the scene several times, after the woman was en route for medical treatment. He allegedly continued to behave boisterously and belligerently, refusing to leave the area multiple times. Angus Bonetto Moodie, 29, of Princeton, was arrested on charges of obstructing and disorderly conduct.

• PETIT LARCENY: Dep. J.D. Ellison took a larceny complaint from Airgas. Complainants there advised that two males and a female entered the establishment, stole three torches and fled in a white van.

• UNATTENDED DEATH: Dep. M.S. Horn responded to Comfort Inn on Ambrose Lane, where a 67-year-old man was reported to have died sometime overnight. The man's wife was the one who reported the emergency, and Princeton Rescue Squad crews found the victim to be dead. The officer talked with the woman present and investigated the scene, but a preliminary investigation indicated no signs of foul play.

• PETIT LARCENY: Dep. J.D. Ellison received a report from a Nemours man who stated his trail camera was stolen. The complainant reported a young male on a fourwheeler had been photographed on the camera recently, but the identity of the male was unknown.

• PETIT LARCENY: Dep. J.R. Coburn responded to Family Dollar Store in Brushfork, where a woman reported a female grabbed her purse in the parking lot and ran toward Purdue Hollow Road. The suspect was allegedly slender and had brown hair. Dep. J.D. Ellison, Dep. M.S. Horn, Dep. J.D. Gills and Coburn canvassed the area and talked with neighbors, but they were unable to locate the suspect.

• FARMING ACCIDENT, UNATTENDED DEATH: A man reported he and his wife found an overturned tractor and a deceased victim in a field near a relative's home on Beeson Road. Cpl. S.A. Sommers investigated the scene and found that the man was partially under the overturned tractor and bailer and that the man's shirt had been partially torn from his body and became snared in the bailer. After processing the scene, the officer concluded that the death occurred as a result of a farming accident and that there was no foul play involved.

• BURGLARY, PETIT LARCENY: A Woodland Lane man told Dep. E.P. Parks that a woman approached his residence and asked to use his phone. Since the man was outside his home, he told her she could use his cell phone. Then, the woman asked to use the bathroom in his house. Without thinking, the complainant reported he gave the woman permission to go inside the house. Later, the man reported finding his late wife's jewelry box open and in disarray, with several items missing. Cash was also allegedly taken from his wallet. Warrants were pending.

Oct. 10

• DOMESTIC BATTERY: Senior Dep. W.C. Wilborn met with a man who reported he was physically battered by his partner. The suspect allegedly kicked the complainant down a flight of stairs. During the fall, the complainant reported he suffered cuts and an orbital fracture to his right eye. The officer advised the complainant on how to seek a domestic violence protective order, and he reported that warrants were pending.

• HIT AND RUN: Senior Dep. W.C. Wilborn investigated a reported hitand- run at the 7-Eleven on Route 19. The complainant advised he was parked in the lot talking with his uncle when the driver of an unknown vehicle backed out of a parking space and struck his vehicle. The complainant and his uncle allegedly tried to get the other motorist to stop, but they were unable to get his or her attention.

• DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY: Sgt. G.W. Woods received a complaint from a man who reported someone threw a rock at his vehicle as he approached the intersection of Meadowfield Lane and Ambrose Lane. The officer observed the dent reportedly left by the rock.

• DUI: Dep. J.R. Coburn and Cpl. S.A. Sommers responded to a motor vehicle crash on Maple Acres Road. Officers located the small Pontiac sedan lying on its top in the road. A male subject who claimed to be the driver was found nearby. Coburn reported the subject smelled of alcohol and appeared to be intoxicated. A blood-alcohol test reportedly revealed the man to register over the legal limit, and Daniel Mason Kirby, 47, of Bluefield, was arrested.

• BATTERY: Dep. J.R. Coburn, Cpl. S.A. Sommers and Dep. J.D. Gills responded to a disturbance at C&J Grocery on Route 10 in Kegley. As the officers were en route, Mercer 911 advised the owner of the grocery store had been involved in an altercation in which a shot was fired. The complainant advised an unknown woman had entered the store and allegedly concealed a small package of beef jerky without paying for the item. The complainant confronted the woman, who allegedly claimed she had not concealed anything, paid for several items and left the store. The complainant reportedly reviewed surveillance tapes and saw that the woman did hide the food. Approximately 15 minutes later, the suspect returned and began attacking the complainant. The complainant grabbed a pistol located directly below the register. As the two women continued to struggle, two men allegedly ran inside, pulled the suspect off of the complainant, tossed her gun to the floor and carried the suspect outside. The complainant pursued them, hoping to get a description of the vehicle in which they fled. As the three subjects got into a Nissan truck with furniture in the back, the complainant told officers the vehicle headed toward her. She fired a shot at the vehicle in hopes of scaring the subjects away. The truck allegedly pulled off the lot, heading south on Route 10. As officers investigated the scene, a man arrived at the sheriff's department to report that his mother had been involved in the altercation as she helped him move. He reported he and his brother had stayed outside in their vehicle until they saw their mother inside involved in the fight. When they fled the scene, he told officers the mother got in her car and headed home to North Carolina. The case remained under investigation.

• DAYTIME BURGLARY: Sheriff D.B. Meadows responded to a burglary call on Eads Mill Road. Entry to the home was gained through the back door, which was kicked in. Numerous items were reported missing. Inside, a backpack had been emptied, and the sheriff determined the suspect or suspects had used it to carry some of the stolen items out of the house. Missing items included bows, a tackle bag, arrows and more. The investigation was ongoing.
