Mercer Sheriff — March 28-April 1, 2008

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

MERCER SHERIFF

March 28

• PETIT LARCENY: Cpl. Det. L.B. Murphy arrested Vanessa Diane Pendergrass, 29, of Bluefield, as a result of a warrant obtained during an investigation into an alleged embezzlement at Grant's Supermarket in Green Valley.

March 29

• DISORDERLY CONDUCT, PUBLIC INTOXICATION: Dep. G.C. Paitsel responded to Ryan Village, where a female was reported attempting suicide. West Virginia State Police Trooper Cook was already on the scene, speaking with the female, who was reportedly highly intoxicated. After she calmed down, officers left her at the apartment with family members and advised her to remain inside, due to her condition. Approximately 5 minutes later, the same woman was reported outside, threatening others. As Paitsel returned to the scene, the woman allegedly fled back to her apartment, where she was arrested. Rebecca Sue Rowe, 41, of Princeton, was charged with disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

• ATTEMPTED BURGLARY, DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY: A woman in Shadow Wood Mobile Home Park reported someone attempted to enter a back door to her home and fled when she screamed. Dep. E.P. Parks investigated and patrolled the area but was unable to locate a suspect.

• BURGLARY, PETIT LARCENY, ABUSE OF ELDERLY: Dep. R.M. Combs responded to a residence on Rural Route 1, where an 88-year-old female reported an unknown female came to her residence, knocked on the door, forced her way into the home and asked to use the phone. The complainant reported she believed the woman stole her purse as she entered the kitchen area of the home. The case remained under investigation.

• BREAKING AND ENTERING, GRAND LARCENY: A complainant in Duhring reported someone busted the lock on his garage and stole a tool chest, miscellaneous tools, a heater, a fishing tackle box, a paint gun set and a chop saw. Dep. J.J. Ruble investigated and reported the suspect also tried to make entry to the residence by kicking a back door, but did not get in that way. The case was forwarded to the detective bureau.

March 30

• DUI: While patrolling U.S. 460 in Green Valley, Cpl. S.A. Sommers reported seeing a GMC Jimmy traveling halfway in the emergency lane. He initiated a traffic stop near Coconut Road and reported the driver exhibited glassy, bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. After failing one field sobriety test and being taken into custody, Fred Harrison Bray Jr., 43, of Rock, allegedly refused to submit to further testing. He was charged with DUI.

March 31

• DOMESTIC ASSAULT: Sgt. S.J. Cary responded to Midway Street, where an unwanted guest was reportedly refusing to leave. The complainant advised her boyfriend and another male were intoxicated and the second man refused to leave. Cary spoke with the man, who agreed to leave but said he needed a ride somewhere else. As the officer advised he would transport the man home, the couple in the residence began to argue because the woman called the police. Officers started to clear the scene and allegedly heard the residents arguing inside. Soon they saw the woman running toward them, screaming the boyfriend had hit her. Cpl. S.A. Sommers and Cary arrested Ronald Lynn Maxey, 49, of Princeton, on a charge of domestic assault.

• GRAND LARCENY, BURGLARY: Dep. A.M. Ballard responded to apartments behind Rosie's in Bluewell, where a complainant reported a laptop was stolen from inside an apartment. The complainant reported he typically didn't lock the apartment door and that the laptop had been stolen sometime between Saturday afternoon and Monday. The computer was described as a Dell laptop, silver and black in color.

• PETIT LARCENY: A complainant reported a pressure washer was stolen from the bed of a pickup truck at Mercer Mall. Dep. J.R. Coburn investigated and located a pawn receipt at a local shop. The investigation was ongoing.

April 1

• DOMESTIC BATTERY: Dep. W.E. Rose responded to a residence on Beckley Road, where a female complainant reported a male had attempted to hit her before she fled into the woods behind the home. He allegedly threw an object at her, hitting her in the face, before she was picked up on U.S. 19 by a friend. Jeremy Somyk, 31, of Princeton, was charged with domestic battery.

• OBSTRUCTION: Sgt. S.J. Cary responded to Montcalm Grocery, where a group of subjects reportedly attempted to vandalize pop machines in front of the store. The officer located seven subjects and detained them to assess the scene. He reported there was no visible damage to the machine in question, but he could see it had recently been moved. As he was obtaining information on the subjects in the group, one allegedly began to act out and refused to leave the scene. Christopher Shane Lusk, 31, of Rock, was charged with obstruction.

• GRAND LARCENY: Senior Dep. R.E. Haynes Jr. filed a grand larceny report for a Princeton man who reported an outboard motor, a welder and a weed eater were stolen from an outbuilding that was broken into in February.
