Mrs. Mary Lena Thompson
TAZEWELL, Va. — Mrs. Mary Lena Thompson, age 94, of Tazewell, Va., departed this life on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at her home with her children by her bedside.
Born November 6, 1918 in Tazewell, Va., she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Leola Smith. She was a lifetime member of Midway Church of Christ, D.O.C. where she was a member of the choir and the Christian Women’s Fellowship.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin G. Thompson Sr.; her son, Kenneth Thompson; brothers, George Smith, Raleigh Smith, and Charles Smith; two sisters, Louise Cecil and Margaret Riley.
She is survived by a brother, Beverly Smith of Tazewell, Va.; a sister, Celestine Harmon of Los Angeles, Calif.; her daughter, Mary Sue McDonald of Cleveland, Ohio; her son, Melvin G. Thompson and wife, Tiona of Las Vegas, Nev.; five grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 4, 2013 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va., with the Reverend Nelson McCall, Elder Andre Wallace, and The Reverend Todd French officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell, Va.
Pallbearers will be William Smith, Ronnie Thompson, Robert Smith, Jr., Shea Moore, Christopher McDonald, and Melvin Smith. Honorary pallbearers are Sam Watkins, Jr., Omar Reed, Herbert Moore, Mike Moore, Jerry Smith, and Terry Ward.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Sunday, March 3, 2013.
