She was born January 20, 1920 in Elkhorn and the daughter of the late Preston and Annie (Penn) Smith. She was a graduate of Elkhorn High School and valedictorian of her class. After graduating, she became a homemaker and a foster grandparent through the Council of Southern Mountains. For over 70 years, she was a faithful member of Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church in Kyle, W.Va. She served as Mother of the Church and the last surviving charter member of the Choir.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Edward L. Johnson and James H. Crawley and her 11 siblings. She was the last surviving member of her original family.
She will be lovingly remembered by her son, Curtis D. Johnson of Mansfield, Ohio and six grandchildren, three of whom she raised: Cordney D. Johnson, her caregiver of the home; Robert Watkins of Maybeury and Marcia Leeth of Kennesaw, Ga.; Kurtis Goins of Columbus, Ohio; Yvette Stephens-Wallace of Cleveland, Ohio and Jerry Allen of North Carolina; several great-grandchildren, eight nephews and nieces: Alfredia Hardie, David R. Smith Jr., Patricia Smith, Jimmy Smith, Billy Smith, Elsie M. Jones-Hubbard, Jimmy Crawley and Joe Crawley; one great-nephew, Junior Lee Terry and a special son, Dr. James Martin of Beckley, W.Va.; her church family and a host of other relatives and friends.
Home going Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, July 5, 2013 at Mercy Seat Missionary Baptist Church in Kyle, W.Va. with the Rev. Harold Calloway, officiating, assisted by: Pastor Walter E. Clay, the Reverends David Cooper and Tim Hairston. Entombment will follow at Rest lawn Mausoleum on Rt. 20, Littlesburg Road in Bluewell, W.Va.
Friends may call at 10:00 a.m., until time of service on Friday at the church.
Pallbearers: Ricky Helm, Victor Helm, E.J. Ivy, Wesley Lemons, Henry Martin Jr. and Rodney Powell.
