Randle Jackson Wood, age 87, of Warriormine, West Virginia, passed away Friday, August 30, 2013, at Bluefield Regional Medical Center in Bluefield, WV. Born October 1, 1925, in Matoaka, WV, he was the son of the late Clinton and Isabella Alice Grant Wood and he was the last surviving member of his family.
He was a resident of Warriormine of many years. Randle served his country for 22 years as a Staff Sergeant for the United States Army, where he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart Medal. He served in both the Korean conflict and World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post 43 of War, WV. After retiring from the Army he was employed by the McDowell County Board of Education for 16 years as a custodian.
Preceded in death by, in addition to his parents, two infant children, Randle Jackson Wood, Jr. and Robina Ann Wood; three brothers, William Wood, Everett Wood, Clinton Wood; three sisters, Helen Wood Johnson, Violet Wood East and Isabella Alice Wood Richardson.
Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Rebecca Mitchell Wood and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at 11 A.M. from the Fanning Funeral Home Chapel in War, WV with the Reverend Spencer Oxford, officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield, VA where military graveside rites will be conducted by the Iaeger V.F.W. Post 1144 and Bradshaw American Legion Post 175.
Friends may call Tuesday morning at the funeral home, from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
