Mrs. Willie Mae White Davis

PRINCETON — PRINCETON — Mrs. Willie Mae White Davis, died at the Princeton Community Hospital after a brief illness November 8, 2014.

Born July 5, 1929 in Bluefield, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late, Mrs. Ruthie Anna Harvey and William Milton White. The youngest of seven children,

Mrs. Davis spent all of her childhood and adult life in Bluefield, W.Va., graduating from Genoa High School and attending Bluefield State College. She worked at Bluefield Sanitarium, now Bluefield Regional Medical Center, for over 40 years as a Nurse’s Aide, Head Nurse, and retired as a Pharmacy Technician. Mrs. Davis was the first African American to work on the white wards at Bluefield Sanitarium. She was also one of the leaders in providing advocacy for bussing of children, after the integration of schools in Bluefield. She believed in advocating for the rights of those who are in need. After her retirement, she actively participated in volunteer work with the American Red Cross Blood Bank, Mary’s Cradle, and the Foster Grandparent’s Reading Program in elementary schools, as well as providing support to her many friends and family members. She was a member of John Stewart United Methodist Church, where she served in many leadership positions. At the time of her death she was president of her choir, president of the United Methodist Women, the president of the Pastor Parish committee and a member of the Administrative Council. She worked actively with United Methodist committees in the Bluefield Parish, the Southern District and the West Virginia Conference.  She never missed the Annual Conference at Buchannan, WV. she was preceded in death by all of her siblings except for Mrs. Katherine L. Neal of Bluefield.

Survivors include her loving husband of 54 years, Earl Monroe Davis; five sons, Samuel of Silver Springs, Md., William of Bluefield, Glenn of Antioch, Calif., Algerman (Vanessa) of Oakland, Calif., Earl (Sharon) of Atlanta, Ga.; and two daughters, Katherine Brown (Arthur) and Josephine Poe (Ralph), both of Bluefield; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; The Neals, her nieces and nephews who she loved as her own; and scores of other nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

A celebration of life service will begin at noon at John Stewart United Methodist Church, 102 Jones Street, Bluefield, WV 24701 with the Rev. Dr. Felicia Williams officiating. Interment will be at Restlawn Memorial Gardens on Route 20, Bluefield, WV.

Friends may call two hours prior to service Thursday, November 14, 2013.
