RICHLANDS, Va. — James Fetty Roberts, age 87, of Richlands, Virginia, passed away Friday, November 8, 2013, in a Richlands hospital following a lengthy illness.

He was born in Tazewell County, Virginia and was the son of the late Samuel Monroe and Rebecca Smith Roberts. He was a retired coal miner for Jewell Ridge Coal Company and Pittston Coal Corporation and was a member of the United Mine Workers Association. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. James was a lifetime resident of the area and he loved to attend his church, the Richlands Tabernacle. He loved life and everything about it, he also loved meeting people and he never met a stranger. Once you met James Roberts, you now had a new person you could call a friend.  

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his great-grandson, Israel Joseph Lambert; sister, Rosa Lee Bandy; seven brothers, Wade, Sylvester, George, Albert, Sydney, Charlie and John Roberts; several half-sisters and half-brothers also preceded in him in death. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.  

Those who survive him are: His loving wife of 60 years, Lovis Bucklen Roberts of Richlands, VA. Daughters: Patricia Ball and husband Steve of Abingdon, VA, Phyllis Roberts of Rosedale, VA, Drema Nolley and husband Mark of Richlands, VA, Donna Husband and husband John of Bramwell, WV. The joy of his life was his grandchildren, Brennen Ball, Kayla Ball Joyce and (Derick), Greg Webb, Lori Webb Ward and (Stephen), Kelli Nolley Smith and (Aaron), Jarod Nolley, David Lambert, Amy Lambert, Jonathan Lambert and (Nicole). His great-grandchildren, Isabella Ward, Eli Ward, Jaxson Smith, Luke Smith and one on the way, Mason Joyce.

Funeral services for James Fetty Roberts will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 11, 2013 at the Richlands Tabernacle in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Ralph Horton officiating. Entombment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands from 6:00 -9:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 10, 2013. A one hour visitation will be at the church on Monday, prior to the service.
