JOLO — JOLO — Tom “Poppy” Thornsbury, Jr., 87, of Jolo, W.Va., passed away, Saturday, September 21, 2013, at his residence.

Tom was born August 15, 1927, in Stacy, Va., a son of the late, Tom Thornsbury, Sr. and Mazie Rife Thornsbury. He was a coal miner for 45 years. “Poppy” enjoyed fishing, squirrel hunting, ginseng, gardening and spending time with his family.   

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Kerry Scott Thornsbury; five brothers, Clyde, Ezra, Homer, Doug, and William Thornsbury; four sisters, Sarah Belle Stacy, Rosie Blankenship, Ocie Shelton, and Ella Mae Sandal.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Amie Baker Thornsbury of the home; three sons, Jerry Wayne Thornsberry and wife, Debby of Raysal, W.Va., Terry Edward Thornsbury of Mooresville, N.C., and Elbert Thornsbury and wife, Debra of Mooresville, N.C.; four daughters, Ruth Ann Lewis and husband, Jerry of Jolo, W.Va., Debra Kay Fuller and husband, Benny of Mooresville, N.C., Glenda Carol Lambert of Statesville, N.C., and Donna Mae Manes and husband, Brien of Iaeger, W.Va.; one brother, Hobert Thornsbury of Jolo, W.Va.; seven sisters, Ida Osborne and husband, JR. of Jolo, W.Va., Hazel Blankenship of Jolo, W.Va., Susie Stacy, Vinnie Miessau, and Geraldine Evans, all of Florida, Maxine Skinner of Georgia and Tessie Foster of Sophia, W.Va.; 13 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 26, 2013, at 1 o’clock, with Bishop James Daniel Estep, the Reverend Bill Harman, and the Reverend Glenn Blankenship officiating at the Chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger, W.Va. Burial will follow in the Baker Cemetery on Baker Fork of Estep Ridge near Paynesville, W.Va. Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons.

Friends may visit with the family at the Chapel of Fanning Funeral Home in Iaeger, Thursday, September 26, 2013, from 12 noon until time of services.
