RAVEN, Va. — Miss Jane Ellen Horton, age 60, of Raven, Virginia, passed away Thursday, September 19, 2013 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.  

She was born July 2, 1953 in Richlands, Virginia and was the daughter of the late A.W. (June) Horton, Jr. and Gladys Thompson Horton. Jane was a graduate of Richlands High School, Class of 1971; Clinch Valley College; and East Tennessee State University. She was a retired Registered Nurse, having worked at Mattie Williams Hospital in Richlands, Tazewell Community Hospital's Home Nursing Department and The Home Nursing Company of Richlands.

She was a lifetime member of Clearview United Methodist Church at Doran, Virginia, serving as Treasurer and preparing the church bulletin boards for many years. She was a member of the Richlands Eastern Star Chapter No. 104; a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Fort Maiden Spring Chapter; a member of the Tazewell County Historical Society; a member of the Richlands Citizens for the Arts; and a long-time election official at Raven, Virginia precinct. Jane was also the bookkeeper for the Raven Super Market/True Value Hardware, the program director for the Horton reunion's and she was the Secretary-Treasurer for the Raven Theater and Coal Museum. She was one of the organizers for the Richlands High School Class of '71 Reunion and was a loyal Richlands Blue Tornado and Cincinnati Reds fan. She was a lifetime resident of Richlands area. Jane was a loving, caring sister and a friend to all, she will greatly be missed by all who knew and loved her.  

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, A.W. Sr., Dora Horton, Robert Lee and Grace Thompson.

She is survived by: Her brother, Albert W. (Rocky) Horton and wife Pat of Raven, VA. Nephews, D.J. Stilwell and wife, Terri of Raven, VA, Jonathan Stilwell of Tennessee. Great Nieces and Nephew, Brooklin, Brenley and Bryson all of Raven, VA. Her Aunt, Charlotte Burgess of Roanoke, VA. Cousins: Howard and Kathy Burgess of Roanoke; John Burgess of Roanoke; Susan Thompson of Germantown, MD; Karen Thompson of Hollywood, CA; Robin Thompson of New York City; George and Ann Justice of Grants Pass, OR; and Johnny Bob Justice of Washington State and a host of friends and relatives.

Funeral services for Jane Ellen Horton will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 22, 2013 at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. James Brooks officiating. Interment will follow at the Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, VA. The men of the Clearview Methodist Church will serve as pallbearers.
