HENDERSONVILLE, Tenn. —
Dr. Betty Masters Alexander, August 21 1940 - Aug. 20 2013; United Methodist leader in the Tennessee Conference and in Nashville UMC, preceded in death by parents, Paul and Ewilda Whitenack of Bluefield, VA and husband, Wayne Masters.
Survived by husband of 27 years Dr. Ben C Alexander, sisters Mary Frances Chappell and Peggy (Don) Scott; greatly loved by nieces and nephews, and Mary Cay (Alexander) Koen, Margaret (Alexander) Feasley, and sister-in-law Bettye Jo Masters.
A graduate of Bluefield College (AA), Athens State University (BA), Vanderbilt University (M Ed and D Ed). Served as Director of College-Church Relations at Martin Methodist College for 10 years. Was a delegate many times to the United Methodist General and Jurisdictional Conferences and World Methodist Conferences in Brazil and England. Member of the Board of Christian Higher Education, Board of Discipleship, and Board of Miriam's Promise. Served on Episcopacy Committee of the United Methodist Church. Her great love was teaching young confirmands for 26 years, as well as being a member of the Hendersonville First United Methodist Choir and United Methodist Women.
Her personal statement of faith was "...to be a faithful disciple of Jesus Christ, called to nurture others in the faith by example."
The family received friends at Hendersonville First United Methodist Church on Thursday, August 22 from 4 PM until 7 PM. Visitation continued at the church on Friday morning, August 23, from 10 AM until 11 AM with the celebration of life at 11, the Rev. Don Hutchinson and Dr. Davis Chappell.
In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to Miriam's Promise and to Martin Methodist University.
