Tony Steven Harmon

ALGOMA — Tony Steven Harmon, 66, of Algoma, W.Va., born January 31, 1947, passed away February 13, 2013 in Roanoke, Va.

He was educated in McDowell County Schools and was a graduate of Elkhorn High School. He later served in the U.S. Army as Airborne in Germany. He then returned home and went to Massachusetts for several years. He later moved to Tampa, Fla. where he lived for 19 years and was employed by Busch Gardens, and later returned to his home in Algoma, W.Va. and was employed at WoodTech until he became disabled. He was the first black man to run for Northfork City Mayor, and was President of Coal City Transit attempting to get bus routes from Bluefield through McDowell County.  

He was born to the late James and Luvenia Harmon. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Masaud Harmon; one sister, Beulah Harmon; and one brother, Osby Harmon.  

Those left to cherish his memory include: His wife, Selma Harmon of the home; two daughters, Tonia, and Antoinette Harmon of Detroit, Mich.; two sons, Steven Harmon of Detroit, Mich., and Christopher Harmon of Florida; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; three sisters, Delois Fuller of Kyle, W.Va., Pearl Saunders of Northfork, W.Va., and Erlease (Patsy) Bigelow of Gastonia, N.C.; one brother, Orlando (Claude) Harmon of Springfield, Mass.; and a host of  nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, and a special friend, Brenda Kelsor.

A memorial service will be conducted (today) Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at A.P. McConnell Funeral Home, 260 Cherry Street, Bluefield, WV 24701.
