RICHLANDS, Va. — Robert E. (Bob) Howell, Sr., age 94, of Richlands, Virginia, went home to the Lord, Friday, September 27, 2013 at his home. Born September 11, 1919 in Roanoke, Virginia he was the son of the late James Burton and Mary Alice Smith Howell.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margie Osborne Howell; one son, Robert E. (Bobby) Howell, Jr.; a great-grandson, Justin Shelton; one brother, Marvin B. Howell and one sister, Mavis Pat Underwood.

Bob and Margie started their life together in their new home in the Lake Park section of Richlands on Easter Sunday 1949. They joined the First United Methodist Church together in 1950. Bob grew up in Red Ash, VA where he attended the Red Ash Elementary School and graduated from Richlands High School in 1938 and Perry Business Scholl in Brunswick, GA in 1939. He and his father was in business operating the Howells IGA food and clothing store at Red Ash. Bob joined the Army Air Corps in January of 1942 and served three years overseas in the European African Middle East Theater of operations where he received 11 Battle Stars including Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Sicily, Naples and air combat pilot at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe and was awarded the presidential distinguished Unit Badge. In 1994, the 50th anniversary of the battle of Normandy he received a medal of the Jubilee of Liberty. 2001 the French authorities awarded a Diploma to the American Veterans of WWII who liberated France and in so doing changed the history of the 20th century. Bob was president of the Richlands Kiwanis Club in 1961-62 when the club started the Richlands Rescue Squad and the Dalton Library. In 1995 Bob was awarded Legion of Honor for 40 years of service and he served for many years as a volunteer at the Good Samaritan Food Pantry in Richlands. Bob was a charter member of the Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640.

He is survived by three sons, Kenneth Howell and wife Jeannie of Red Ash, VA, Douglas Howell of Richlands, VA and James David Howell and wife Jennie of Lebanon, TN; four daughters, Delores Ann (Dee) Turner and husband Roy of Richlands, VA, Dot McGlothlin and husband Tom of Richlands, VA, B.K. Cunningham and husband Don of Florida and Linda Boyd and husband Larry of Cedar Bluff, VA; a daughter-in-law, Jan Howell of Red Ash; one sister, Mary Thelma Burns and husband Robert of Richlands, VA; 8 grandchildren, Althea Brooks, Doug Howell, II, Matessa Keen, Jennifer Street, Sarah Marie O’Quinn, Laura Ann Howell Mollo, Chris O’Quinn and Victoria Howell; 12 great-grandchildren also survive.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 9 P.M. Sunday, September 29, 2013 at the Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff.           

Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 30, 2013 at Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia with the Rev. Betzy Elifrits Warren officiating. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Casey-Shortt VFW Post 9640. Those attending the graveside service are requested to meet at the cemetery Mausoleum Chapel by 10:45 AM.
