TAZEWELL, Va. —
TAZEWELL, Va. — Helen Virginia Collier, age 96, a longtime resident of Tazewell, Va., passed away peacefully Saturday, September 21, 2013 in Blacksburg, Va. Helen was born May 18, 1917 in Indian Valley, Va. to George Washington Quesenberry and Cora Lilly Quesenberry. August 10, 1964 began her long and faithful service as a member of The Order of the Eastern Star. She served as Worthy Matron of Princess Pocahontas Chapter 112, Pocahontas, Va. (1972-1973); Worthy Matron of Tazewell Chapter 187, (1988-1989); and was an Honorary Member of Bluefield Chapter 102, Bluefield, Va. Additionally, she served as a Grand Page, Emblem Bearer and Delegate to The Grand Chapter of VA. She was a top notch hairdresser in her younger years, plying her trade in Bishop and Tazewell. She attended Main Street United Methodist in Tazewell. Helen's special passions were her beautiful handwork and sewing, whether quilting, crocheting, knitting, embroidering, stitching Bunka, or sewing clothing and home décor items, among a multitude of other interests and crafts. She was a delightful hostess and gourmet cook. She loved pulling pranks, telling jokes and dressing in surprise funny costumes, whether on Halloween, a birthday, or to get a laugh on an ordinary day.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Lee Collier who passed away in 1997. She was the youngest of ten siblings, all who have also preceded her in death; five sisters, Woodie Moore, Snowie Fay Quesenberry, Mattie Marshall, Rachel Cox, and Garnet Kennedy; four brothers, Waitman Quesenberry Velt Quesenberry, Shafter Quesenberry, Rollie Quesenberry. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by one son, Russell Lee Collier of Blacksburg, Va.; one daughter, Karon K. Smiley of Wellsburg, W.Va.; daughter-in-law, Marie Collier; grandson, Jeff Smiley of Bluefield, W.Va.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Friday, September 27, 2013 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home in Tazewell, Va. with the Reverend Dr. Thomas A. Conley and the Reverend Barry Dean Marshall officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be Larry Quesenberry, Jeff Smiley, David Quesenberry, Terry Quesenberry, Barry Dean Marshall, and Ray Johnson. Donald Kennedy will serve as honorary pallbearer.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, September 26, 2013 at the funeral home where an Eastern Star service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m.
