Muriel Anita Hurt Stanley

RENO, Nev. — Muriel Anita Hurt Stanley, died peacefully, October 27, 2012. She was born on September 22, 1921, in Hemphill, West Virginia, the daughter of Thompson Henderson Hurt and Maggie Smith Hurt.  

Muriel earned her Bachelor's degree in Education from Concord University in Athens, W.Va., and served during World War II as an armed courier in the Washington, D.C. area.

After Monsie returned from combat in Europe, Muriel and Monsie Rane Stanley Jr. were married on February 24, 1946, in Kimball, West Virginia.

 In 1952, they migrated across the southwest U.S. pulling a travel trailer, selling educational books and settling in Ridgecrest, Calif.

She began her California teaching career as teacher of 1st through 3rd grade in a 2-room school house in Johannesburg. Over the years each summer she took classes, earning her California Teaching Credential and finally a John Hopkins Master's degree in Education as she continued on to teach elementary school classes in Ridgecrest and China Lake, to eventually become the first reading specialist in the Sierra Sands School District.

 Muriel was nationally recognized by Delta Kappa Gamma for her 50 years of educational service and was a founding member of the Desert Area Teachers Association.

Five years ago, Muriel and Monsie moved to Reno, Nev. for medical reasons and to be close to their family.

Muriel was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Monsie Rane Stanley Jr.; her parents, Thompson and Maggie Hurt; her sisters, Myra Hurt, Melba Rector, Doris Yates; and brother, James.

She is survived by her sons, Brad (Sharon) of Reno and Greg (Jane) of Sparks; grandson, Dustin of Lebanon, Mo.; granddaughter, Dillon (Bart) Lambert of Reno and great-grandchildren, Jillian, Lucas  and Gabriel Lambert; sister-in-law, Mosha Hurt of West Virginia; dearest friends, Alice Mae Parker and family of Ridgecrest, Calif.; cousin, Carol (Jim) of Pantaleo, Calif.; nieces, Gail Rector of West Virginia, Susan (Rusty) Thompson of North Carolina; nephews, Don (Martha) Rector of North Carolina, Brian (Debbie) of Peake, Ky., Mike (Sue) Hurt of Oklahoma, David (Edie) Hurt of West Virginia, Bob (Helen) Stanley of West Virginia, James Stanley of Virginia, and Joe (Christine) Yates of Connecticut.  

Services will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, 2 p.m. at the Ross, Burke & Knobel Mortuary, in Reno.
