Andrew David Fox

DRAPER, Va. — Andrew David Fox, 27, of Draper, Va., formerly of Tazewell, Va., died Friday, Oct. 5, 2012 of injuries sustained in the line of duty when he was struck by a driver while directing traffic at the State Fair near Richmond, Va.

Born Dec. 18, 1984, he was the son of Julia Karen Surface Fox of Tazewell and David Harman Fox of Tazewell. He graduated from Tazewell High School and Virginia Tech with a degree in agricultural science. He worked with the Town of Tazewell police department, then joined the Virginia State Police in 2006, assigned to Fairfax County until his recent transfer to Pulaski County.

While in Fairfax, he escorted President Bush, President Obama, and many dignitaries traveling in northern Virginia. He was a member of the State Police Honor Guard, instructor at the State Police Training Academy with expertise in advanced defensive tactics, radar and LIDAR, a field training officer, and had recently been named to the Tactical Team. He received a number of commendations for exemplary service.

Andrew was keenly interested in farming and, beginning in high school, worked on several farms in Tazewell and Wythe counties. It was his dream to operate his own beef cattle farm. He and his adored wife, Ginny had just begun building a house.

He was a member of the Draper Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of Tazewell Baptist Church and attended Wytheville Baptist Church.

Andrew was affable, kind, compassionate, tolerant, even tempered and unfailingly polite. He was a man of integrity, with a strong work ethic, and he took pride in doing a good job wherever he worked. Andrew's genuine humility belied his persistent focus on reaching the goals he set for himself; he methodically achieved each one with quiet determination. He was a loyal friend, generous and always ready to help others. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enlivened many a family dinner table with his hilarious stories.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Patricia Williams Surface, and by his paternal grandparents, Roy C. and Sarah Katherine Fox. He was the second police officer in his family to be killed in the line of duty, following his great-uncle, Jack Sargent.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia Martin Fox; his parents; his sister, Lauren Alainna F. Fox and her husband, Ryan Bruce Fox, of St. Augustine, Fla.; half-brother, Thomas Fox of Tazewell, Va.; parents-in-law, Roger and Glenda Martin of Wytheville, Va.; brother-in-law, Scott Martin of Wytheville, Va.; grandfather, H. S. Surface Jr. of Tazewell, Va.; grandparents-in-law, Marie and Rush Martin, and Twyla and Glen Felts, all of Wytheville, Va.; nephews, Riley Bruce Fox, Grayson Andrew Fox, Ethan Martin, Eli Martin, and niece-to-be, Evelyn Jean Fox; as well as several aunts; an uncle; cousins; a host of friends across the state; and Bella.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Police Benevolent Association,

A memorial service will be held Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012 at 2 p.m. at The Refreshing Center (Pulaski Church of God), 1621 Bob White Blvd., Pulaski, Va. with Pastor Joe Naylor and First Sergeant Mike Honaker officiating.
