Betty Jo Griffith

PRINCETON — Betty Jo Griffith, 78, of Bradford Pear (Vintage Oaks), Princeton, died late Saturday evening, May 11, 2013 at her residence.

Born June 6, 1934, in Tazewell, Virginia, she was the daughter of the late William Edgar Akers and Cynthia Stevenson Akers.

Betty was educated in Tazewell.

Betty along with her late husband Allen started in the grocery business with a small store on Mercer Street in Princeton. Together, they built a reputation for friendly and courteous service, the best selections available for produce and meats while giving personal attention to every customer who shopped in the store. Because of these efforts and support of their community, from their hard work and efforts, they were able to establish three locations in the Princeton area to service their customers Allen's supermarkets were known throughout the area for their service and selections.

Betty along with her late husband leaves a legacy for their generosity and charitable giving to many groups, organizations and foundations.

Betty was a very simple person who loved to get dressed and go out to eat.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her devoted husband loving husband of 61 years, Harvey Allen Griffith, along with a son Mark Griffith, and five siblings: William “Bill” Akers, Alford Eugene Akers, Mary Sue Shutt, Mary Isabel Akers and Sharon Hope Akers.

She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her two sons, Michael Griffith and wife Debbie of True, Marty Griffith and wife Teresa of Northview Estates, six grandchildren: Marquetta Shrewsbury, Jeremy Griffith, Mark Griffith Jr., Chrissie Marshall, Gracie Griffith and Josh Griffith. Great-grandchildren, Kyle and Mattie Griffith; Alexandra, Kaitlyn and Faith Shrewsbury, Austin and Trista Griffith; Lacee and Mason Marshall.

Additional survivors include six sisters, Nancy Altizer and husband Eddie, Patsy Daniel and husband Sam, Edith Jackson and husband Tommy, Christine King and husband J.E., Judy Congrove and husband Jim, and Linda Akers. Two sisters in law, Doris Akers and Carol Sue Akers. Brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Phyllis and Jack Waddell. A host of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, May 17, 2013, from the Burns Wornal Chapel of the Memorial Funeral Directory on the Athens Road in Princeton with Pastor Larry Dyer, Pastor Jerry Martin and Pastor Dr. John King officiating. Burial will follow in the Grandview Memory Gardens on the Bluefield Tazewell Rd., Bluefield, VA.

Friends may visit with the family Thursday evening from six until 8 PM at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be her family and close friends.

The honor of serving the Griffith family has been given to the Memorial Funeral Directory Cremation Center on the Athens Road in Princeton.
