BLUEFIELD, Va. — Clyde Wyatt Bowling

BLUEFIELD, Va. — Clyde Wyatt Bowling, 101, of Bluefield, Va., died Wednesday, April 24, 2013, in the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Salem, Va.  He was born in Cedar Bluff, Va., February 26, 1912 to John Blair and Sally Grace Wyatt Bowling.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Zell Bowling Neel, a grandson, Kevin Bowling and a nephew, Edward Bowling.

As a young boy, he moved to Bluefield, Va., and graduated from Graham High School in 1931.  In 1933 and 1934 he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps.

He served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the European Theater and later worked for the N&W Railroad.

For thirty years he served as Boy Scout leader and received several awards including, the coveted Silver Beaver Award.  He was elected Treasurer of Bluefield, Va., in 1962 and held the office for many years.  He also served as board member of the Cumberland Plateau Planning  District for 13 years.  He was instrumental in establishing the Mountain Dominion Resource Conservation and Development Area (R.C.&D) and served as chairman.  He also served in the offices of the State Association of R.C.&D councils and was elected to the Virginia State Association of R.C.&D Hall of Fame.

He worked with the Tazewell County Transportation Safety Commission for 40 years to improve highways and increase safety.  A new bridge which spans the N&W Railroad and the Bluestone River on Rt. 102 in Tazewell County was named the CLYDE BOWLING BRIDGE in honor of his many contributions to the community.

On his 95th birthday, a resolution was presented to him from the Virginia General Assembly commending and congratulating him on his outstanding service to Tazewell county.

He was a faithful member of Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church since the 1920's and taught the Elderly Men’s Class for many years.

He was an ardent fan of the Graham G-Men and was a longtime member of the Graham High School Booster’s Club.  He was also a member of the American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Bluefield Business and Professional Association and a charter member of the VFW Post 9696.

He is survived by a son, Alex Bowling, Baltimore, Md.; Brother, Ralph Bowling and wife Vernia, Chesapeake, Va.; granddaughter, Kimberly Bowling, Jonesboro, Va.; and great-grandson, Jordan Bowling-Patterson, Warrior Mines, W.Va.; nephew, Dr. Richard Neel and wife Binnie, Huntersville, N.C.; nieces, Laura Bowling, Chesapeake, Va., and Betty Neel Cook and husband, R.A., Richlands, Va.; great-nephews, Dr. Jeffery Neel and wife Niki and Edward Bowling Jr.-; great-niece , Cindy Maple and husband, Rick; three great-great-nephews; two great-great-nieces; special friend, Buddy Pierce, Jr.; and many wonderful friends who remained faithful to him in his years of declining health.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Ramey and Dr. Ken Sprinkle officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church, 1901 Virginia Avenue, Bluefield, VA 24605.
