ROWE, Va. —
Rev. Ancil Childress
ROWE, Va. — Rev. Ancil Childress, age 89, of Rowe, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday (March 26, 2013) in a Richlands, Virginia hospital. Born September 9, 1923 in Skeggs, Virginia, he was a son of the late Rev. Coy and Rachel Rowe Childress. He was a United States Army Veteran, having served in the 82nd Airborne Division as a paratrooper during World War II. Upon his return from the war, he married the love of his life, Kathleen Horne on May 4, 1946. It was shortly after their marriage that the couple realized their need for salvation and were both saved at a revival in 1949. Within only months of his conversion, the Lord called him to preach the Gospel. That calling developed into a ministry that transcended denominational boundaries and reached countless souls. He was Pastor of Rowe Pentecostal Holiness Church as well as a community leader and friend to many. He was commonly known as the Funeral Preacher and spent most of his time preaching funerals and visiting the sick. His service to the community allowed him to receive the honor of being inducted into the Buchanan County Hall of Fame.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, L.C. Childress and Kay Childress.
Survivors include his loving wife of sixty-six years, Kathleen Childress of the home; three children, Ronald James Childress and wife, Bonnie of Compton Mountain, Virginia, Anna Ruth Belcher and husband, Donnie of Rowe, Virginia and Judy Naomi Street and husband, James of Grundy, Virginia; four grandchildren, Mark Anthony Belcher and wife, Elizabeth of Richlands, Virginia, Ashlee Belcher Cook and husband, Brad of Lebanon, Virginia, Brittany Danielle Childress Hale and husband, Brian of Abingdon, Virginia and Elizabeth Moriah Street of Grundy, Virginia; one sister, Janis Hodock of Radford, Virginia; one brother, James Harvey Childress and wife, Jackie of Honaker, Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Annette Childress and Irene Coleman; special extended family, Janie Fleming, Kate McClanahan, Ellen Fletcher and family and Norma Cook and family; Papaw Ancil's little buddy, Silas; several nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and church family also survive.
