John “Jay” W. VanDyke, 75, of War, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, March 22, 2013 in Golden Harvest Long Term Care, Welch following a long illness.
Born October 26, 1937 in War, he was the son of the late John A. VanDyke and Lona Elizabeth VanDyke. He was a retired miner from Olga Coal Company. He was a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in War where he served as a Deacon for 16 years. He loved to hunt and fish.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother and sister, Don VanDyke and Janice Faye VanDyke.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ruby L. VanDyke of the home; a son, Johnny VanDyke and wife Brenda of War; a daughter, Tammy Johnson and husband Kerry of Tazewell, Va.; a brother, Fred VanDyke and wife Rosie of War; six sisters, Shirley Day and husband Jack of Edgewood, Md., Imogene Mitchell of Blacksburg, S.C., Linda Campoli and husband Al of Lexington, Ky., Brenda Rutherford and husband Steve, Kathy Stress and husband Edwin, and Pam Wingo and husband Dannie all of Yukon; a very special sister-in-law, Brenda Kay Rutherford of Yukon; a grandson, Kerry Jay Johnson of Lindside; a granddaughter, Tia Griffey of Tazewell; and four great-grandchildren, Tanner and Kylee Johnson of Lindside, and Eli and Zoey Jae Griffey of Tazewell.
Funeral service will be conducted Monday, March 25 at 11 a.m. in the Emmanuel Baptist Church, War with the Reverend Spencer Oxford officiating. Entombment will follow in Grandview Memory Gardens, Bluefield, Va.
Friends may call at the church Sunday from 6-8 p.m.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
