Mary Emory Modena

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. — She was born May 16, 1921, in Oak Hill, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her parents, William Lawrence Emory and Bertha Andre Emory; seven brothers, Clyde, Ira, Ray, Everett, Vincent, Wilbur and Harold; two sisters, Olive Emory and Flora Emory Stulley.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Aldo A. Modena; her daughter, Colleen Bivens, daughter, Robin Segesta and her husband, Tom; son, Ralph Modena and his wife, Linda, and son, David Modena and his wife, Mary Beth. Her surviving grandchildren are, Aaron Bivens and his wife, Lindsey, Shaun Bivens, Justin Bivens, Amanda Biviano and her husband, Angelo, Brian Modena, Laura Modena, Paige Milavickas and her husband, Chris, Amy Jones and her husband, Parker, Erin Modena, Hunter Segesta and Barrett Segesta. Also surviving are five great-grandchildren, Hannah Stroup, Will Bivens and Caroline Bivens, Lydia Biviano and Augustine Biviano; as well as 21 nieces and nephews.

Mary Modena served in the U.S. Women's Army Corps for four years in the USA and Japan. She and her husband, Al, moved to Bluefield, W.Va. in 1954, and attended Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where she was president of St. Anne's Altar Society, taught religious education classes and participated in various other activities in the church. In recent years, she attended First United Methodist Church of Bluefield, Va., and Brandermill Church in Midlothian, Va.

In 1982, she became actively involved with Appalachian Teen Challenge and its substance abuse residential training and treatment center in Athens, W.Va. She served as secretary of the Board of Directors, and as an instructor in its GED program for 25 years.

A celebration of life and memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 7, at Brandermill Church, Midlothian, Va. The Rev. John Briggs and The Rev. James M. Nickels of Appalachian Teen Challenge will conduct the service. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. A private family interment will be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Richmond, Va.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Appalachian Teen Challenge, P.O. Box 980, Athens, W.Va. 24712, or to a favorite charity.
