James Marshall Spain Sr., 90, passed away on July 25, 2013, at Lewis Gale Medical Center in Salem, Virginia after an extended illness. He was born on July 17, 1923, to Charles Everett and Caroline Walle Spain in Petersburg, Virginia.
Jim was a veteran of the United States Navy Seabees, serving during World War II in the Aleutians, Hawaii, Okinawa, and other locations. In 1983, he retired after a long career with Kroger Corporation. Jim always enjoyed attending services at Willowbrook Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rose Marguerite Spain; two brothers; one half brother; and one half sister.
He is survived by his son James, Jr. and wife Sherry Spain of Kingsport Tennessee, his daughter Deborah and husband Jack Cranford of Melfa, Virginia, son John Spain of Princeton; five grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and one brother, Richard C. Spain of Atlanta, Ga.
Funeral services were held Saturday at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton and graveside services followed at Orchard Cemetery in Ballard, West Virginia, with Pastor Emory Marchant of Willowbrook Baptist Church officiating. Pallbearers were James Mitchell, James Spain Jr., John Spain, Jack Cranford, Taft Durr, and Matthew Durr.
