R.G. “Spurg” Spurgeon

NORTH TAZEWELL, Va. — R.G. Spurgeon “Spurg”, age 75, of North Tazewell, Va. died Sunday, July 21, 2013 at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell, Va. with his family by his side. Born January 18, 1938 in Tazewell, Va., he was a son of the late Royal Frazier Spurgeon and Harriett Ritter Spurgeon.

He was a proud employee of Virginia Department of Highways for thirty-one years where he was accident free and was explosive certified. R.G. was also an honorary life member of the Bristol District Employee's Benefit Association. His hobbies included taking care of the wildlife and tending to his cats.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only son, Phillip E. Spurgeon; and one brother, Kenneth Spurgeon.

He will be greatly missed by his wife of fifty-four years, Mary Spurgeon; two brothers, Clarence Spurgeon of Lumber City, Ga. and Donald Lee Spurgeon of Rockville, Md.; one daughter, Yvonne McGuire; special daughter, Loretta Hubbard; granddaughter, Melissa Spurgeon Hankins and husband, Jonathan; grandson, George David McGuire and Megan Mullins; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, 2013 at Peery & St. Clair Funeral Home Chapel in Tazewell, Va. with Kelly Bandy officiating. Burial will follow at Grandview Memory Gardens in Bluefield, Va. Pallbearers will be Brian Hieatt, Harold Heatley, Chuck McNerlin, Rod Holt, Kevin Hale, and Jonathan Hankins.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, 2013.

The family requests memorial donations (food or monetary) be made in Spurg's name to the Tazewell County Animal Shelter, 108 E. Main Street, Tazewell, VA 24651.
