Hearrel Ray

POUNDING MILL, Va. — Hearrel Ray, age 84, of Pounding Mill, Virginia, passed away Thursday, July 11, 2013 at Tazewell Community Hospital in Tazewell, Virginia.  

He was born in Pikeville, Kentucky and was the son of the late Wayne and Mary Price Ray. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Korean War. Hearrel was a retired truck driver and was a lifelong resident of the Pounding Mill area. He attended Cedar Bluff Community Church in Cedar Bluff, Virginia. Hearrel was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Harvey Ray.

He is survived by: His loving wife of 62 years, Gwendolyn Ray. Two daughters: Mary Starlette Hill and husband, Bill of Pounding Mill, Virginia, Charlotte Ray Rose and husband, Joseph of Pounding Mill, Virginia. One son: Larry Harold Ray and wife, Lisa of Pfafftown, North Carolina. Three sisters: Mavis Wysong and husband, Fred of Michigan, Linda Gomache and husband, Bob of Tennessee, Sue Webb and husband, Ronnie of Kentucky. Three brothers: Vernon Ray and wife, Fay of Florida, Alvery Ray of Florida, Clarence Ray of Kentucky. Five grandchildren, Hearrel Benjamin Ray, Cheryl Lynn Ray, Billy Joe Hill, Bryon Hill and Frankie Rose. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren along with a host of family and friends.

Funeral services for Hearrel Ray will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 15, 2013 at Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with the Rev. Richard Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell, West Virginia. Members of the Casey-Shortt VFW #9640 will conduct military graveside rites. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The Ray family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Sunday evening at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home.
