Raymond E. (Ray) Blankenship
LANCASTER, S.C. — Raymond E. (Ray) Blankenship, age 71, of Lancaster, S.C. and formerly of Bluewell, went to be with the Lord on Monday, January 7, 2008 at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Born on December 2, 1936 in Crumpler, he was a son of the late Cager and Thressie Robinson Blankenship. He had been a resident of Lancaster for 17 months and was a retired coal miner with 21 years of service at Consol Coal Co. He was a member of the UMWA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four half-brothers and two half-sisters.
Survivors include: Wife of 47 years: Shelby Craft Blankenship of the home; one son: Michael Ray Blankenship and wife Sherri of Bluewell; two daughters: Tamra Jean Roland and husband Tommy of Bluefield, Shelley Marie Hager and husband Larry of Lancaster, S.C.; two granddaughters: Melissa Blankenship of Bluewell and Kallie Marie Hager of Lancaster, S.C.; four sisters: Dell Fizer and husband George of Gaffney, S.C., Betty Angle and husband Jimmy of Princeton, Tessie Johnson of Princeton, Rosemary Shrewsbury of Lancaster, S.C.; one brother: Bill Blankenship and wife LuAnn of Winston-Salem, N.C.
Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, January 11, 2008 at 1:00 p.m. at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with Pastors David Kirby and Steve Jacks officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell with Joe Roland, Earl Lowe, Joey Roland, Kevin Smith, Larry Johnson, and Shane Smith serving as pallbearers. Ray's nephews and Jimmy Craft will serve as honorary pallbearers.

WELCH — Earl Chafin, 87, of HC 31 Box 97, Welch, formerly a 44-year resident of Coalwood, died January 5, 2008 at McDowell Continuous Care.
Born February 25, 1920 in Marbone, he was the son of the late Wallace and Grace Loving Chafin. Mr. Chafin was a member of the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Coalwood and was a retired television repair and service technician from Olga Coal Company where he had also worked as a brakeman and was a member of the local UMWA No. 6026. Mr. Chafin’s hobbies were fishing, gardening and always loved to go for a walk.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Evia Newsome; two sisters and three brothers.
Surviving are: His daughter: Brenda Dillon of Coalwood and two sons: James Chafin and his wife Martha of Coalwood and William Chafin and his wife Francis of Algood, Tenn.; one brother: Everett Chafin of Kansas and three sisters: Gail Blankenship of North Carolina, Reva Barnett of Virginia and Delores Collins of New Jersey; seven grandchildren: Kristina Dillon, Donna Fox, Rose McReynolds, James Chafin III, Ray Chafin, Melissa Petti and China Rose Chafin; eight great-grandchildren.
Memorial Services for Mr. Chafin will be conducted on Friday, January 11, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. from the Coalwood Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Pastor Stella Falvo officiating.

ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. — Carli Farmer, 73, of Rogersville, Tenn., formerly of Princeton, died Monday, January 7, 2008 at his home. Born October 17, 1934 in Mercer County, he was the son of the late Earnest A. Farmer and Virginia Williams Farmer.
Mr. Farmer was a retired coal mine supervisor for Consolidated Coal Company. He was also a retired building contractor. He was a member of the old Matoaka Baptist Church. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge No. 134 AF & AM in Princeton and the Beni Kedem Shrine in Charleston.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirlene Monk Farmer in 1995; one son, Dwight Farmer; and one brother, Dwight L. Farmer.
Survivors include two daughters, Stacy Quesenberry and her husband Curtis of Princeton and Teresa Vandersluis and her husband John of Florida; one son, Eric Farmer and his wife Dawn of Princeton; one brother, Jerry Farmer and his wife Linda of Rock; seven grandchildren, Brian Dillon of Florida, Brad Dillon of Hawaii and Jordan Farmer, Nikki Farmer, Shane Farmer, Darra Farmer and Jody Cline all of Princeton; and one great-granddaughter, Alyssa Dillon of Hawaii.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 10, 2008 at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapel of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Minister Kevin Farmer officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell where Masonic Graveside Rites will be conducted by Masonic Lodge No. 134.

Larry “Luke” Lee Lester Jr.
ATHENS — Larry “Luke” Lee Lester Jr., of Athens, was born on January 6, 1968. After not giving into a long illness and adding many touches to others lives, the gates of heaven swung open wide and welcomed home one of God’s own on January 6, 2008.
He was the son of Larry Lee Lester Sr. and Nancy Caroll Hall Lester. He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Adam Hall, Leona Jennings and Carl Jennings; paternal grandparents, Harley and Effie Lester.
Those left along with his parents to cherish his memories are: Brother, Brad Lester and wife Debrina of Athens; sisters, Melva Lester and fiancé Terry Keaton of Athens, and Judy K. Myer and husband Joseph of Christiansburg, Va.; nieces and nephews: Deanna and Chasity Proffitt, Brina, Brennah and Brady Lester, Kayla and Joey Myer; a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends, and a special friend, Shawn McKenzie for his support to both Luke and the family in their time of need.
